No, it is not possible to search for format markers. This is why they are such a problem.

To get rid of format markers, you can export the document and re-import it, but you tend to get extra signal new lines sprayed all over the document. You might try the two for one replace, and deal with any offending format markers when you find them. Not sure it's possible to look for a format marker, (they show up as $fm I think).
