Dear List,
I'm going to add my two cents' worth to the discussion of the Keysoft 8.0
release announcement.
First off, congratulations to all those who have a need for Instant
Messaging, Keychat, BookShare, Audible.com and GPS. Your wishes have been
granted! You won't be able to wait until the upgrade comes out! You'll
have about a month to come up with the finances. If you have to solicit
from the state, good luck! The greenbacks aren't there. You'll have to
find another way, and with the economy as bad as it is, it will be
difficult. HumanWare, like everyone else, will be hurting.
Since I don't use GPS, Audible, instant messaging, or BookShare, I don't
really need the upgrade.
I admit I'm disappointed HumanWare didn't include support for the NLS
talking book format. It would have given me a reason to upgrade.
I can understand why people are sore about no Windows upgrade or Word
support. I, for one, detest Word and I don't usually get Word docs. But
the support would have been nice for those who need it.
HumanWare didn't implement an upgrade to the Duxbury Braille translator.
This is too bad, because BANA has made changes to the rules and those
changes should have been implemented. I don't know if the BAUK rules have
changed and if so, then some implementations should have been made for
them.) Some people have also mentioned bugs in UEB and they should have
been corrected, even though I personally think UEB is a terrible code and I
hope it's never adopted here in the U.S. Any American who has a use for it
could still use it as an option. There is still too little support for
Nemeth Code or the UK math code. I don't know how much it would cost to
implement the braille improvements.
In this depressed economy, HumanWare will have a problem selling its Keysoft
upgrade. I think they spent too much time on the deaf-blind communicator,
which, I think, has a serious drawback because it's tied to a particular
cell phone. Cell phone models change too rapidly so what happens when the
cell phone goes obsolete? Besides, those of us who use Verizon Wireless
still can't use the BN with our cell phones.
Personally, I'm not goying to buy the upgrade unless it meets more of my
needs than the present 7.5.
