For what it is worth, I agree. If HW insists on going the route of the open source standards, IRC is right up there with XMPP, so just support both under the hood and let the user connect to whatever he/she wants. I think all the chatzilla networks are based on IRC, so that is a bunch more supported networks than any other braille notetaker, possibly excepting the Pac Mate.

Have a great day,
Alex

Subject: [Braillenote] suggestion for keychat

hi all,

I have a suggestion for keychat. Make it support the irc pootocol.
This way people could connect to networks like testing.bitlbee.org,
whig is an IM gateway. Irc is very simple, and this way hw wouldn't
have to worry about messenger pootocols changing. here is an example
of some things you could do after connecting...

nick breakingbigd
user bigd localhost server :someone who doesn't feel like having a real name
join :&bitlbee
privmsg &bitlbee :identify Passwords20R20Good4U
privmsg someone :hi! privmsg someone :you there?
whois someone
quit :someone is not available, so I don't see a point in existing on
this network!

some things to note: if you are sending a string, like a message , you
need to put a colon directly before it. Every so often, the server
will send a ping :string message, the clint needs to reply with a pong
:string. for instance
server: ping :PINGLBEE
client: pong :PINGLBEE
there is an rfc thing on the irc protocol, but i forget the link.
Shouldn't be too hard to find though.

Hope someone at hw sees this and passes it along. As I said before irc
is a very simple protocol, and this way, for IM stuff, hw wouldn't
have to worry ahout msn always changing things.

Thanks.
