For anyone trying to send or receive e-mail while at a hotel I
offer this suggestion.
At those hotels or motels offering wifi where I've had trouble of
this sort, there has always been a toll-free support number
related to the wifi service. The techs on the other end have
never known what a BrailleNote is. But once they know your room
number and what hotel you are in, they can actually watch you try
to log on, and they can tell what's either happening or not
happening on their end that may be causing the problem. At one
facility, for example, the button I had to click to accept the
terms for using the service did not display on the bn. The tech
"pushed" me through that step, and after that I could log in and
use the system.
Bottom line, if HW can help, fine. But even though the tech
support for the wifi service itself may know nothing about the
BrailleNote, those folks can often solve connection problems
while they have you on the phone. To work with them, you should
know which operating system you're using; and you should know how
to look at the details (SSID, authentication level, etc) of the
connection you're using. When you have tech support on the line,
start by scanning for available networks. There may be a number
of hotel wifi services "visible" from your location, as hotels
often cluster together; and tech support can tell you which one
to choose.
Some services require you to enter a password; so check with the
front desk at the hotel where you are to get this information.
In some cases tech support may also need to know your unit's MAC
address, so have this available, too.
One thing about the wifi tech support people: the services I've
had to call offer 24-hour per day service, so you may be able to
call late or early. The number to call will probably be in the
room somewhere, on one of those cards or placards with which
hotels like to clutter otherwise perfectly good horizontal
surfaces. If no sighted assistance is available, the front desk
will probably be able to tell you the number.
Good luck. Connection at these places has happened automatically
for me only very rarely; but then it's also never been
impossible, either.

Subject: [Braillenote] Problem with Sending and Receiving Emails
Hi everyone,
We took a vacation last week and visited my mom and sisters in
Florida. While away I was able to read some BrailleNote emails
and replied, but could not send them. We were staying at a hotel
that had an unsecured wifi. My husband and one of my daughters,
who both had their laptops, had no problem connecting to the wifi
without having to ask for any information from anyone. However,
I couldn't. It did connect, but would not send or receive.
Normally I wasn't in a position to be at the hotel during the day
where the wifi was, but, one sunny day, when my girls went to the
beach, I decided to go to the hotel instead and call HumanWare.
I talked with a person who worked very hard to be helpful, and
was very polite and courteous. While we were talking I was able
to download email from this hotel, but couldn't send any. And,
the next time I tried to download from the hotel the BrailleNote
wouldn't do it, even though I did everything the same way.
He made a few changes too, and I followed his directions, and now
I can't download from home or send using my BrailleNote from home
either.
I will be calling HumanWare tomorrow.
All this to say, if you happen to receive several emails from me
as a result of my replying to messages last week but not being
able to send them, please be patient with me. I don't want to
come across as a nuisance as it will look like I am sending one
email after the next. I wouldn't do that under ordinary
circumstances.
I was reading the manual as we were driving home today and found
out what the dot 7 is, the backspace. I am going to read this
manual every day until I have it memorized.
