Hi,
Yes, I noticed the protection issue. I got around that by first
unprotecting the files on the Apex first.
As for other things, I'm still experimenting with the Apex.
By the way, I can download the special presentation audio fine on
my Apex (it mstly that I'm using my school's Ethernet
connection). The news about a new release is a relief. I hope
to report you on more things (most likely next week when I
perform field testing at school).
Cheers,
Joseph

Hello Joseph,
Well, when i type fast, I will hear a sound that is different
then the normal typing.
It almost sounds like a bird pecking at something.
Also, I have experienced, that I will be typing a long, and all
of a sudden, the speech goes silent, if I toggle through the
propts, of speech off, speech on and speech on request, it
doesn't help, if I turn the unit off and back on my speech comes
back.
I also have experienced, that at some point during the day, I
will have had my unit off for maybe a couple of hours, and when I
turn it on, it is flat, and I will have to perform a hard reset
to get it back.
Tech support, has been great, which I can not say that they were
once that way, but they have been helping with this issue, and
with the issue, regarding hard drives.
They told me on Wednesday, that there is a new release coming out
which I am not sure, if it will be just a fix release, or a new
release altogether but it is coming in the next few weeks,
according to what Sarai told me.
Yesterday, I tried to send a file, to someone, and I got the
message that I used to get on my m-power, which is memory full
can not send this e-mail.
Other then this, I like the new unit.
It is lightweight, and is much easier to type on.
I have noticed, that when I use my cell phone for bluetooth modem
connection at work, that I can now send e-mails, where before I
could only receive, because the bluetooth was not that stable,
but it seems very stable with the Apex.
I have also tried a bluetooth earpiece, so that I can hear the
gps when walking on the stidewalk.
I do not know if you noticed, but if you transfer your address
list, or database from the m-power, you will find, that you have
to go and unprotect all of the files, because the apex seems to
protect them when you transfer them over.
Well, those are my observations for now, and I look forward to
hearing more from you about your new unit.
Take care,
Robert Stigile

Subject: [Braillenote] Few more things with the Apex...
Hi folks, particularly HumanWare developers,
Well, just testing Apex to verify features sets. The WiFi is
very good, so
is Bluetooth, USB, SD and so forth. However, I've encountered
some issues
with KS9.0.534 (yes, Peter, I can confirm your observations.).
some of them
are:
. When attempting to copy subdirectories, the message
"class does
not exist" is displayed.
. After copying files and folders to restore mPower
data, the next
time Keymail is used to send email, "access is denied" appears.
This is when
the target folders (those on the Apex) is unprotected.
. When playing single track media files, the RIGHT ARROW
scroll
button does not work as expected (move towards end of the file).
I bet this
is mainly used to go to last file in the playlist.
. If a user types fast (such as I am), you may find
yourself either
making typos or at somewhere else (for instance, invoking Search
when
pressing SPACE with F when the user meant F followed by a single
space).
. It is impossible to revert back the sounds to factory
defaults.
Previously under mPower and other platforms, it was possible to
revert the
user-modified sounds to default ones via Hard Reset (I mean those
modified
thanks to our "hacks"). Under Apex, when a user loads a Windows
folder on
the Flash Disk that has a wav named "startup.wav" or other wav
corresponding
to Apex sounds, the next time the user performs Warm Reset,
"system files
need updating" will be displayed. Up to this point, it is okay;
however,
when attempting to revert these sounds back to default set,
you'll find that
it is impossible to do it (neither reinstalling KeySoft nor Clear
Settings
Reset did not help).
. When using USB keyboards, ESC key does not work.
Also, the
annoying F10 problem is gone (you can use this keystroke to go to
KeyWeb;
also, you can use Windows key to go to Main Menu).
. Under File Manager/Directory, the help says that there
is KeySoft
System Disk (with no way of accessing it).
. KeyMail: The thing that Frank mentioned is called
Sender to
address List (S) under Email Action Menu. This allows a user to
add the
email sender to the Address List.
. When the "extensions" folders or files such as Oxford
folder for
the Dictionary are deleted (even by accident, as I tried),
there's no way to
get those back. This is because these are stored under Flash
Disk, which
exposes them to unintentional file operations, such as accidental
deletion.
. When you access SDW (Software Distribution website)
with your
Apex's serial number (the last six digits) with the password
"frog1," the
site says invalid serial number.
. There might be a possible confusion with the Read Me
files (both
under Apex's Flash and the one on the Companion CD). The one
under apex says
9.0.0 versus 9.0.1 found under the Companion CD. Maybe there IS
9.0.1 (maybe
being tested by HW at the moment).
. No more "virtual memory is below certain percent"
warnings. The
peak VM usage was 4% (80 MB).
. When the battery is removed with the Apex powered on,
it still
operates.
. The annoying contraction problem is still there when
composing an
instant message. Words such as "but," "can" and similar, which
uses one
letter contractions are treated as single letter if it is
followed by three
dots (.).
Well, I understand that it is due to the fact that it is
essentially KS8.0
under the newer OS. I can also sympathize with HW, which worked
hard to
ensure compatibility between CE6 and KS code. Well, as any user
says, "I
hope these would be resolved soon."
Cheers,
Joseph
