Formatting is a process which will erase all data on the card. It is useful when a card gets corrupted or you want to completely erase a card, maybe to give it to someone else for them to use, but you will normally not need to do this. As to the lack of information, I am not sure why it went away. I know some of it is related to battery callibration, and that process is no longer required, but information about temperature, cycle count, last charge, voltage, and so on could prove useful and I am not sure why it is gone. It is possible that the Apex's battery does not support much of this functionality, being removable instead of built in, but that is just a guess on my part.
