Hi,
Sorry for the incredibly slow response; this is in
response to a question asked by a user on how to set up
KeyChat. So below, I have outlined some basic
instructions to get started with KeyChat.
First of all, do you have a Google Account (or an email
address that ends [email protected])? If you don't, then you
will need to create one. The best way to get GoogleTalk
is to sign up for a Gmail email account, which also
includes access to GoogleTalk. Note that you will need a
PC to do this and you will either need the Webvisum
plug-in for Firefox, the Solona captcha solving tool or
sighted help as there is a CAPTCHA on the sign up form.
Once you have filled in your details and created your
account, it's time to set up KeyChat. To do this, do the
following:
1. From the Main Menu, press c to open the KeyChat Menu.
2. From the KeyChat Menu, press o to open the KeyChat
Options Menu.
3. From the KeyChat Options Menu, press i for Instant
Messaging. Note that unlike other areas in KeySoft, you
will need to press enter after pressing i to actually
open the Instant Messaging Settings List.
4. Once you are in the Instant Messaging Settings List,
press space once to get to the first field, the User Name
field. Note that in all text fields within the list, you
must use computer braille.
5. At the User Name field, type in your full Gmail
address, including [email protected] ending and press enter.
6. The next field will ask you for your password. Type
in your Gmail account password that you set while
creating your Gmail account. Once you've done this,
press enter.
7. The next field is the Auto Connect field. If you
press y for yes, KeyChat will sign you onto instant
messaging as soon as you open the KeyChat menu from the
Main Menu. If you press n for no, you will need to sign
on manually.
8. The next field is the Server Name field. For Google
Talk, entertalk.google.com as the server name, then press
enter.
9. The final field is the server port. For Google Talk,
this is 5222. This value is filled in by default, so
just press enter.
10. You should now be at the end of the list. Press
space with e to return to the KeyChat Options Menu and
space with e again to return to the KeyChat Menu.
Now you are ready to sign in. There are two ways to do
this, depending on whether you said yes at the Auto
Connect prompt. Note that from this point on, you will
need an internet connection for both methods. If you
said Yes at the Auto Connect prompt, simply return to the
Main Menu and re-open the KeyChat Menu by pressing c or
choosing the Chat option. If you are not connected to
the internet, you will be prompted to do so at this
point. If you are connected to the internet, after a few
seconds, you should receive a message that says Signed
Onto Instant Messaging As x (where x is the first part of
your Gmail address). You will be at the KeyChat Menu and
ready to chat. If you said no at the Auto Connection
prompt, then from the Main Menu, press c to open the
KeyChat Menu. Once you are in the KeyChat Menu, press m
to open the My Availability Menu. Once you are in this
menu, press space twice until you get to the option that
says Instant Messaging: Sign On. Press enter on this
option to sign onto GoogleTalk. If you are not connected
to the internet, you will be prompted to do so at this
time. If you are already connected to the internet, you
will be signed onto GoogleTalk and will be ready to chat.
To sign off of instant messaging, use the same option
within the My Availability Menu. While it is not
essential, i'd recommend signing off of instant messaging
before disconnecting from the internet.
Now that your signed on, it's time to add some contacts. For this example,
I will guide you through the steps to
add me as a contact. To do this, do the following:
1. Open the KeyChat Menu and ensure that you are signed
on.
2. From the KeyChat Menu, press s to start a new
conversation.
3. You will get the prompt Chat With?
4. At this point, type a name in grade 2, such as Robert
Cummings and press enter.
5. Assuming this is your first time using KeyChat and
you have no contacts with the name Robert Cummings, you
will get a message that says Robert Cummings Is Not A
Contact. Add? Press y for yes.
6. The next prompt will say Add Contact Too: Instant
Messaging. Either there is a bug here or this part of
KeyChat has not been finished yet, but there is actually
only one option available at this point so just press
enter.
7. The next prompt will ask you for the contact name,
which is the same as the name you entered in step 4. Whatever you entered
in step 4 is already filled in for
you so you can just press enter here as well.
8. The next prompt will ask you for the Contact ID. This is the messaging
address of the contact you are
adding. For example, my Contact ID would be
[email protected]. Type in their address
using computer braille and press enter.
9. You will get a message that says Robert Cummings is
unavailable, try again later. This is because the
contact has not accepted your request, so they are
considered offline. You are then returned to the Chat
With? prompt.
These are just some basic instructions for setting up
KeyChat. There are a lot more things to KeyChat. Hope
this made some sense; feel free to ask me questions and
remember that you are welcome to follow the instructions
and add me to your contacts list.

I think I should be available for that weekend. I am
away from June 18th (this Friday) through to June 22nd
(next Tuesday) and internet access during that time is
not guaranteed. So yes, the weekend after that would be
okay, as I should be around for all weekends up until the
end of July.
I'm sorry to hear about the fact that your sending your
Apex in. My Apex is working okay, though I am having some
computer issues at the moment. But I do have a desktop
computer with a microphone and a copy of JAWS on it which
I could use to access the chat if my laptop is still not
working. Assuming I am able to join the chat (which is
pretty likely for the 26th), I should also be able to
access KeyChat. I use KeyChat quite a lot and have used
it since September 2009 to communicate with friends on
GoogleTalk before I got my laptop. If people use
GoogleTalk and KeyChat and cannot, for whatever reason,
access the actual chat, I would be happy to have people
add me to their GoogleTalk contacts
([email protected]), have them send their
questions to me via KeyChat and i'd pass them along to
the live chat. It should be noted, however, that due to
timezone differences (I am in the UK), I will only be
able to participate in the first of the two chat
sessions. Therefore, this service would not be available
during the second chat, but it is better than nothing. If someone else
would like to do this, then by all means
they can and I won't be annoyed with them; this is only
an offer, it doesn't have to be accepted.
Regarding another voice chat server. I have a TeamTalk
voice chat server which is hosted on my website
(http://muztech.podzone.org). This is an accessible
voice chat system with many channels and I believe the
server can handle up to 100 people (though the total
number of users on the server has never reached this
many, but it should). So if you are looking for a
possible bigger server, contact me off-list and I will
give you more details.

Few updates as of now:
* I'm thinking of hosting the Seventh BrailleNote Chat on
June 26, 2010.
This one will be in two parts:
A. The morning version for Europe and east coast,
sometime around 7 or 8 A.M
Pacific Daylight Time (11 A.M Eastern, 3 P.M GMT).
B. Around 6 or 7 P.M Pacific Daylight Time (10 P.M
Eastern, 2 P.M.
Austrailian, 4 P.M New Zealand (if I'm right), mostly for
Asia. Times and/or dates subject to change. I chose a
weekend time because of
considerations for students and for those who need to
work on weekdays.
* Because of Braille display issuek, I will not be able
to use KeyChat
during the actual chat session. Also, for time reasons,
I'd like to ask if
Timothy and/or other Skype users (if they have a
mictrophone) to try and
participate via TC Web Conferencing (blind Cool Tech Chat
Room). Full
instructions will be provided prior to start of the chat
session. * If it turns out that the demand is high (more
than 25 people), then I'd
like your help in asking perhaps Accessible World staff in
borrowing a room
for our chat (if it is possible).
* For a new PBWorks Support Hotline view: I'm planning to
start implementing
the "Device View" for the PBWorks website. In this view,
I plan to group the
current and future Support Hotline articles based on the
type of unit you
have (Classic, PK, mPower and Apex). As a result, there
will be a
substantial modifications to the Support Hotline section
of the website
(starting this week). The changes will include so-called
"ankers" or "same
page links," which I hope it would help in navigating long
articles. Because
of this, I'd like to ask for your input as to a useful
grouping and/or
criteria for each of the devices that we have - maybe USB
articles for
mPower and Apex, PC card articles for mPower and Classic
and so forth. It'll
be helpful if someone (or a group of users) would go
through the articles on
the site (braillenote.pbworks.com) and help me decide
which article(s)
belong to certain units or not. Thanks.
