Usually it has no effect. This is just the name that other devices will see when they pick up the Apex. However, there is a theory that the iPod and iPhone will not work with an Apex whose name is not the default, so I posted a way to reset the name so people with an Apex and iTouch running iOS4.x could test that theory. If you do not plan on using your Apex with an iTouch, feel free to change the name - it is just a way of personalizing the unit.
