Not always, for example, I have win7x64 and so cannot use my apex as a display with jaws, and nvda refuses to work. However, you bring up a good point: to see a symbol, simply open a braille document and type the symbols in an order you know or after the word, such as period . colon : and so on. Then translate the file into text and open it again, setting your text document reading grade to computer braille or just leaving the reading grade alone and putting your cursor on the symbol in question.
