If you know how to install packages, you install a Jabber server. My choice is for prosody. You also install the transport you need, like PyMSNt, and configure it to talk to your server. Finally you use a client like imcom or Psi or Miranda on Windows to log in and register. It is a bit complicated, but if you have the energy to learn, it should be possible.
If all you want to do is get access to a particular service, it might be worth using someone else's server. I can offer you access to MSN on the BrailleNote using my own server, if that is all you need. However, you still need a client to register to the service, and you still need to approve the transport which BrailleNote simply cannot do, so unless you get an address under my domain, you still need a PC. I have sent HumanWare a request. It would bring them back in competition with PacMate, now complete with Mundu IM, a multi-protocol client.
