Hi,

If I understand right, what Josh is suggesting is using realtime email
notifications - which is somewhat doable yet not quite possible under the
unit in question. Email communication is handled not by KeySoft, but by
Connection Manager (connmgr), quite similar in "appearance" to what we have
with chat notifications. However, because of the way KeySoft is written,
it's not really possible to emulate not all realtime functionality of
getting notification sounds for email.

Are there options to solving this dilemma? Certaintly - reusing components,
allowing KeyMail part of KeySoft to get messages from email handler saying,
"ask the operating system to sound this sound when new message arrives" and
so on. Of these, I believe it'll be slightly easier for HumanWare
programmers to reuse notification components under KeyChat in KeyMail i.e.
allow users to do something when new email arrives. I can see two options
coming to mind: something similar to KeyChat where user will be prompted to
do something when new message arrives, or adding a status text after
"KeyMail Menu" is displayed to let users know how many new message it has
received. The former method could include an option to not prompt for
options but display number of new messages and/or play a sound, and the
second method would be similar to what we have with Database Manager -
displaying the name of the database file after "KeyBase Menu" is spoken. In
simple terms, either of these cases (using status notifications or sounds to
indicate new messages) means almost fundamental change to how we view and
use email on the BrailleNote (and I can see it coming in near future).

As a small test: for those who think they understood this picture, please
explain it using simple words...

Cheers,
Joseph

I do not think that this is possible at this time. Unless I am
misunderstanding part of the bn system, here's what's going on.

The bn can only really run one program at a time, with a few exceptions.
When you are receiving email, that is all that your bn is doing. It is not
like computer based email programs that sit in the background, waiting for
mail. You have to go tell your bn to receive email. Unless hw adds a feature

that allows email to process in the background, this is not possible at this

time.

HTH,
Nicole
