Last week during a hearing when I was representing someone, my Apex froze twice. The only remedy was to reset, and in the process significant pieces of my hearing notes were lost. Dealing with this issue was also quite distracting at a time when I needed to be fully concentrated on the testimony being given. After the second reset the unit functioned okay through the rest of the hearing; but I cannot now consider my Apex as a reliable machine for use in prime time.

I called tech support and was told that they had received only two or three reports of the Apex freezing. This surprised me, as I had seen more reports than that on this list. They asked me to look for patterns, such as the program I'm in, certain keystrokes, and dso on, which seem to bring on a freeze. They said the more patterns they know about, the better their chances of identifying the problem. I understand this approach, but because they sold me the unit for full price, I did not expect to have to be a beta tester for the software.

If you find your Apex freezing, try to remember what you were doing with the unit just before the freeze, then send or call in a report to tech support. If they don't hear about the problem, they will think that no problem exists.

I was also advised to save the file frequently while working. (For me, the freezes occur when I'm writing in the word processor or sometimes when I haven't written anything in the file for a couple of minutes but then find that the cursor won't move.)

My unit: Apex bt 32 running ks 9.1build 1031;

At time of last freeze, wireless was off; sd card inserted, but the file in which I was writing was on the flash disk; after reset, battery reportedly at about 70%; approx. 6.88gb free on the flash disk; nothing running in the media center, and no recent, rapid task switching.

At freeze-up, unit does not respond to any keyboard, cursor, thumb-key or combination commands, including space with E and space with H. Reset brings back either the main menu (after rebooting) or a string of zeros and colons which will sometimes allow entry of space with E to get back to the main menu. After reset, the file in which I was working contains none of the information entered since the last save.

All thoughts about Apex freezes and how to prevent them are welcome.

Steve
