Hi Timothy:

How have you cleaned your display?

Have you increased the display intensity?

The braille display is mechanical, but I do not know that they wear out or down.

I clean my display with paper hand wipes, They are alcohol based and leave no residue. I do this about every two weeks and I do the same with my braille display connected to my work PC.

Depending on your BrailleNote's age the intensity level may or may not work. Humanware changed the display a few years ago.

I know of no one who has worked on the braille display independently with any success. I may have some parts if you are interested, but I would discourage you from attempting to repair your unit. Humanware can look your unit and provide a repair estimate.

If you are in the USA there are grants and low interest loans that may help.

Best of luck.
