It actually sounds like one of your keys, likely the outer left thumb key or the space bar, is stuck. Carefully check each key, pushing it in and releasing it, to check that it is moving normally. I say this because the command to toggle speech is the outer left thumb key with space, so as you tried to space through the main menu the bn kept seeing you pressing the space bar, plus the (likely) stuck thumb key, and thinking it was a speech toggle command.
