Hi

This will depend on how bad the damage is and how confident you are playing with electronics.

First, I'm assuming that your BN is out of it's warranty period otherwise you shouldn't attempt to do anything.

Next, if you read my recent message on changing the battery and get to the point where the unit is open, you'll notice that the main circuit board is partially attached to the base panel. This board houses the CF slot, along with most other things. If you can feel something loose when the unit is open it's likely to be the edge of the CF slot which has got broken. The only function of the edges of the slot is to guide the CF card correctly into the slot to mate with the many-pinned connector at the end of it. It's possible that you might be able to carefully break off the broken slot edge and still have enough left to guide your card to where it needs to be, but only you will know that and only when you have the unit open.

I'm pretty sure HW won't, or perhaps can't, replace just the slot. I would imagine that the main board is made for them as a unit and they may well not have the equipment which allows them to unsolda and resolda a multi-pin slot like this on a multi-layer circuit board.

All this is just my thoughts and there could be something else altogether wrong that I haven't thought of, but you did ask.

Finally, I have an adapter which allows me to use the PCMCIA slot on the righthand side of the BN as a Compact Flash slot. the card comes up as a PC disc in file manager and would allow you to continue to use your CF cards if you didn't know about this already.

Hope this is of some help

All the best

John

Hi all,

I tried to send this message from a different account but am not sure it went through so am re-sending. The compact flash card slot on the back of my BrailleNote is no longer working; it seems like a piece must have somehow gotten detached, as I can feel a loose piece. I have no idea how this might have happened; this BrailleNote has never been dropped or roughly handled, and it was working fine just moments ago. So, is there any way to fix this myself, or will I need to send it to the company? I am assuming the latter but wanted to check.

Thanks...

Lucy
