Every once in a while when I check my email on my apex, I get an error 10050. Does anybody know what that is and what I can do to fix it?
Sure. I'm going to hazard at least a semi-educated guess here. Ready? Here goes...
This type of error is what's known as a winsock error or socket error. That's all the techie jargon that I'll give you. Suffice itt to say, at the time that you attempt to check your e-mail, you've lost your network connection. Try reconnecting to the available wi-fi hot spot. My guess is that you're trying to do this over a wi-fi (wireless) connection and that the connection is very flakey. Am I right? I've run across this error more times than I care to count, and each and every time, it's been because my Apex was trying to use a wireless connection that was of dubious quality. Odds are that I was just barely within range of the wireless router or that there was something that was causing some sort of interference with the connection. Wireless connections are using radio signals, believe it or not, and they operate more or less effectively within 300 feet. Get outside that range and all bets are off, unless the wireless router that's broadcasting has a repeater or amplifier to boost its effective range. In my case, I was sitting on the porch of a bungalow behind a nighclub and a group of shops, one of which had an open wi-fi network that I could grab on to, and the connection was shaky at best.
Now, if you're close to your available wi-fi hotspot, perhaps in a house or apartment, and there are appliances near the router which may be running and introducing RF (radio frequency) interference that can stop your connection cold, the appliance may be causing your problem. Tell whoever's running the microwave to shut down that sucker while you grab your e-mail. The popcorn or Lean Cuisine TV dinner can wait. <grin>. Change the orientation of the router's antennae if you can, or, worst-case scenario, move the router away from the offending appliance.
