Exactly. Once you label an email with all the labels you want, you
then archive it to get it out of your inbox. There is no way to label
and archive in one step, though. Still, as Grant said, you can use
filters which makes things easier, automatically labeling emails based
on whom they are from and/or to, the subject, the text, and whether or
not there is an attachment (you can mix and match all those). You can
also use filters to tell gMail to skip the inbox for messages,
labeling them and hiding them in one step. This is handy for, say, a
list you don't check much. Just open up its label every so often and
you have all your messages, but none ever went to the inbox. Filters
are very powerful and handy once you get used to them. As before,
though, you need to be in basic html to get to settings, where you set
all this up.
