A few observations I've made about reading Spanish (on an apex
with Keysoft 9.2):
* Grade 2 English with accents reads fine (as in, dot 4 before
the letter); the Apex will read this as English though of course
..
I may be slightly odd, but I tend to write my Spanish Literature
essays in grade 2 (like you use for English) and with the dot 4
before the accented letters - for the simple reason that it is
(for me) that little bit faster in a pressured/timed exam
situation.
* In my opinion, the only way to make Spanish sort-of behave on
the Apex is to get the Unicode characters displaying correctly.
So on the MPower, we had a blank space for a Unicode character
whose display combination wasn't set, when using computer
braille. Now, annoyingly enough (in my opinion, anyway) we have
to see the whole word - A Acute, Square Root, Inverted question
Mark-whatever you like-they all are displayed like that by
default.. Aaaand ... if you tell the BN it's Spanish (in a
Braille document) it won't say "A acute" or whatever; instead
it'll have a row of apparently blank spaces and "A acute" will
materialise upon putting the cursor there.
Have you managed to get around the exception message when setting
display patterns for Unicode Characters? If not, then you'll have
to edit the Custom USA Computer Braille Table file manually ...
which is slow, but doable. :)
* Of course, you can just use Spanish Computer Braille - but I
don't do that, personally (I'm not too keen on the extra dot 7 or
whatever it is that displays with the accents, and changing back
and forth between English and Spanish all the time is a bit of a
pain ...).
* I have a feeling that the BN doesn't interpret accents in some
ascii files correctly ... Try asking the 'emailer' to send the
file in word 97-2003 and see if that helps.
* So therefore no, you don't have to use just Braille documents
for Spanish - though I've only tried keyword braille, keyword
text and .doc myself on the Apex.
OK, this e-mail's a bit of a mess structure-wise but hopefully
it's kind of useful anyway. ;)

Thanks Chris. :) I just wanted to tell you and everyone else
that I had overlooked something. In the files that I got,
wherever there's an accent, it says Acute followed by the
accented letter. However, instead of being a symbol, Acute is
actually spelled out. So you can understand what I mean, here's
a word that's supposed to have an accent: COLECCIOacuteN
Notice how the word acute is there instead of a symbol?

Try changing the reading grade for Spanish to computer Braille.
To do this,
if you haven't done so already, first go to language options in
the options
menu and enable Spanish. Once Spanish. Then go into the Braille
options
(also in the options menu,) and set "preferred reading grade for
Spanish" to
computer Braille. If you have learned the Braille symbols for
the Spanish
accents, the symbols should be familiar to you when they show up
on the
display. If you don't know the Braille symbols, either check
with your TVI

My VI teacher sent me some Ascii files, which are written in
Spanish,
through email. However, when I open one of the files, it's very

I use KeySoft 9.2. Is there a way I can fix this? Can you only
use braille
documents when writing in Spanish, since you can write in grade 1
or grade 2
and the accents only require a dot 4 before the accented letter?
