What does synthesizer for screen reader mean? What does it do?
What screen readers can be used with it?

Remote synthesizer allows a BrailleNote to act as a synthesizer
for a screen
reader, whereas Braille Terminal allows BrailleNote to be used as
a braille
display with screen readers. You cannot run both at once.
