Hi, all. Has anyone gotten their mPower to work with NVDA as a braille display using either serial or bluetooth? I can't seem to get NVDA to load my bn as a display. I got it to work with JAWS after I bought a usb to serial port adapter cable and hooked up the serial cable that came with my mPower to it, then connecting that new "usb" cord to my computer and the bn. I got it to load as both a braille display and a remote synthesizer. I'm not so happy with the synthesizer, though. It occasionally spits out something that says "y dieresis" or what sounds like "oo" as part of the text, and for some reason it doesn't use my pronunciation dictionary. I was really hoping to occasionally use my bn as a synthesizer and have my pronunciation fixes implemented thanks to my dictionary. Ah well. At least it switches languages. I didn't expect it to do that for me. I was pleasantly surprised. Speaking of synthesizers, is it possible to get NVDA to see my bn as one? I don't see it anywhere in the list. Thanks for any assistance.

Hello Members,
I'm trying to learn how I am able to operate the Apex with jaws and my
laptop. I find that the keyboard commands/shortcuts are very confusing with
what both humanware and Freedomscientific has to offer. Is there any
tutorial that will explain to me as to how I can use the Apex with Jaws 13? I am about to start school and would like to be able to use the apex to both
control the laptop and read while I'm in classes. Thanks.

Hi again, all. Has anyone figured out how to work the keyboard emulator while using the bn as a braille display with JAWS? I've tried everything I can think of, but no matter what keys I push while in emulator mode, Jaws does nothing. The only keys it seems to acknowledge are the thumb keys for moving the display. I even tried seeing if keyboard help would react at first just to see if this emulator mode even works. It just remains silent. Is there something blindingly obvious I need to do first to get this up and running? I like the existing command set that Jaws has in place for letting the bn work with the computer, but it's lacking quite a bit of functionality. I remember having a lot more control with a Braille Lite 40 I had
while I was in middle school. That's why I tried emulation.
Any help would be, as always, greatly appreciated. Perhaps this should go to the Jaws users list, but I'm not subscribed to it yet, and this is sort of a bn issue.

Have you tried a reset? What about exercising the display (options, space-i, x)? Aside from that I can't think of anything, and it sounds like you might have some hardware problems. I hate to say that, as I know how hard it is to be separated from your bn, but you may have no choice. Of course, call hw support first as a final resort before shipping the unit off to the hospital. Hi all,

Yesterday, I posted about some issues I was having with my Braille display; the problem has since gotten worse. Now, no text at all displays in the first 24 cells of the display. I'm guessing this problem may require sending the unit in, but is there anything at all I can try before doing that? I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Apologies for any errors in typing; I'm not used to writing without being able to use the Braille display to proofread.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Lucy

Well, a macbook or iOS device paired with a braille display seems to be a good solution for those solid in their braille skills. I only say that because there are sometimes odd grade 2 translation problems you have to know about and be ready to deal with, so those learning braille may not want to do this. Still, I find myself using my bn only for wordprocessing, the calculator, and the book reader, and the Braille Edge has those built into it (and is $2700 for 40 cells). Pair that with a mainstream solution and you have quite the team for getting things done. On Aug 1, 2012, at 7:19 PM, Richard Fiorello <[email protected]> wrote:

Hi;
I have been considering the same question. For example I can purchase the voice-note for approximately $2,000.00 If I add a 32 cell display the price jumps to 6400 or approximately a 4400 charge for a 32 cell display. Yet I can purchase a 40 cell display for 3,000 significantly less. True the 40 cell display will be larger but somewhere about 1400 is getting lost. I was hoping one could purchase a voice-note and simply connect a braille display when needed. Tech support tells me that's not a possibility. Also when I ran a few questions past them I was a bit disappointed in my answers. For example, If someone sends me an email with a link to a site in the message I can't just enter on the link I have to copy and paste. Seems rather basic. Also the problem of flash hasn't been delta with. On the other hand the newest greatest unit from hims is about the same price and with the exception of my email issue has similar problems. I took a look at the newest braille plus running on android which sounds interesting but the price is about the same as the braille note with an 18 cell display and at least so far although you buy through aph if there are any serious service issues it first goes back to aph and they in turn send it to level star. Bottom line is there isn't an ideal solution out there. If i was more daring I'd just buy an i-pad or netbook.--

Hi,
I'm sure you did this, but did you install the keyboard emulator or signed
BN driver on your computer? If you installed it, then under Task Manager, a
program called "pdihooks.exe" should be running while in terminal mode.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi all,
Am loving my Apex and am sure will love it even more once I'm online
with it. Having trouble there, but this message isn't about that. I had
mentioned a bit ago about having issues with the Apex seeing my thumb
drive. Well, that's solved as when I used a different one, it saw it
just fine, but when I tried to save a file from it to the Apex I wasn't
able to. Can this even be done and please tell me how if it can be? Thanks.

Ahh, very simple. Have you tried moving or copiing a file to the
flash disk? If you have, then I don't know of any other way you
could save a file to the apex.

cheers,

As far as I know, the HumanWare braille display which is equivalent to the
BrailleEdge 40 in price, doesn't have any stand-alone notetaking features. I
don't know how well it works with WindowEyes, but I know the Edge works
great. The only disadvantage is you must write in computer braille, but you
can read in contracted braille. If you have Duxbury Braille translator on
your PC, then you could use that program to write contracted braille and
backtranslate to text.

Hi all,

So I just sent my Apex in for some pretty major repairs. I got it
back, and now there's something else wrong - which wasn't
malfunctioning before sending it in. One of the keys on the keyboard
(the DOT 6 key) squeaks when you press it - it sounds as though it's
rubbing up against part of the internal casing or something like that.
I'm not really too keen to send it in once again, so is there anything
I should try before doing so? I've found instructions online for
cleaning "mainstream" computer keyboards, but they all involve prying
up the keys, cleaning with silicone spray, then reattaching the keys.
The keys on the Apex don't sound like the kind of things I should be
fiddling with by myself. What do you guys think?

Grant

Yep, I called them and they said there's nothing to do but send it in
again. They also said they can't document the problem, so if I dont
send it in during my warranty period, then I'll be charged for the
repairs.

All the more reason for me not to send mine in to get the dot 5 issue
fixed. Yeah, that would be smart, huh. Lol
