To: <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Hi folks, My sincere apologies on this matter... Due to problems with Yahoo Groups, namely Yahoo ID requirement, no way to manually add people and accessibility concerns with list archives, I'm thinking we should switch to Freelists. I know, this is a short notice, but since the list would be run by users and we want to keep the list format as is (where people with computers or not can join us), I think we should move on. I'd like to gather your opinion as soon as possible (likely before Wednsday or Thursday) so we can have a smoother transition (I think Yahoo Groups transition was not that smooth). Benefits of freelists include more accessible archives, ability to add people manually and more flexible group configuration. In short, this means that anyone who requests to join the Freelists group can email the mods and get added instantly. Also, Freelists allows creating webpages, which would be useful for us to let people check archives and change email options. Again my sincere apologies for this short notice and problems with Yahoo Groups... Thanks for your considerations. P.S. If we do decide to move to Freelists, those who are on the Yahoo Groups will automatically get added to Freelists group (unless you say otherwise). One downside about Freelists is that you cannot remove a mailing list, but I think that's something that wouldn't matter for now. Other than that, Freelists mimics Mailman a lot in terms of functionality. My original plan called for using Yahoo Groups for a while, then move onto another list manager if problems arise (which did happen so soon); in the end, I and Alex Hall envisioned running a user list on our site using our site's host, but we hit email limit problem. Apparently there is a website host out there which doesn't really care about number of emails on a list per hour, which would have been our ideal host. Thanks for your vote. I guess I'll wait for others to chime in. P.S. Is list management on Freelists doable using KeyWeb? Only text entered into the braille terminal will be transmitted to the iPhone, so there is no way to paste a chunk and have it sent over. Sorry. As a side note, other displays can do this, specifically the Braille Edge from Hims, if memory serves. Definitely a feature hw should look into adding. On Sep 4, 2012, at 1:52 PM, "frank M. Is there something specific that needs to go into that field? Also when the BN finds the IPhone there are a list of three things for services that come up. They are: hands-free printer serial. Which one should I select, if any of them? Luckily for us, there is already a BrailleNote list made by Jose Lomeli; however, due to inactivity and no mods, I contacted Freelists staff to change to mod email address to mine. As for sudden change of list managers, we first thought Yahoo Groups would be a good one since many well-known blindness organizations uses it. However, it was discovered that we had a number of people with subscription difficulties, concerns were raised about inaccessibility of archives and sign up process and other features that the admins needed were not there. Also, I thought that it was safe to make another move since this (HW) list would not be going away for the next three weeks, so it was a good opportunity to find a better list manager than Yahoo (we were planning to use Yahoo for a while, but the problems snowballed so soon). Once the new Freelists list is running (as I need to update whole bunch of info), I'll send subscription and other info to this list. Also, as a courtesy gesture, those who are on the Yahoo Groups will automatically be moved to Freelists unless you say otherwise. Again my apologies for this mess. It is simply because, as I have schoolwork to attend to, I will not have time to receive all the emails I get from here. I am not going to subscribe to the other one, for the same reason. This list has been a great help to me for the short time I have been on it, and I thank people for their suggestions and support. I know more about the braillenote than I did before I joined here. Thank you again, sincerely, for all your help, Ellie ------------------------------ Message: 28 Date: Tue, 4 Sep 2012 15:19:28 -0700 From: "Joseph Lee" <[email protected]> Subject: [Braillenote] List info for BrailleNote list on Freelists To: <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Hi folks, You can now join the BrailleNote list on Freelists.
