Karen did you get a compact flash card with the unit? The card should have a documents folder and there should be a file for the receiver and the and a document for the braille note on how to run it.
The bottom left button is a light and buzzes when the receiver is turned on. The bottom button on the right is the on and off switch. It takes about 6 seconds for it to shut off after pushing the button. I use the light button to check to see if the unit is on. If you hear the hum then it's on if not it's not. Hope this helps. It's also possible that if you didn't know it was on, and left it on for over 18 hours, then the batteries may need to be replaced.
