Paul, I'm not really sure what you are depicting.  The character which you are 
describing (dollar sign followed by an l) is NOT a forced new line command, but 
is only the word wrapping from one line to another.  These formatting 
characters are only shown if you route your cursor directly to them, and not 
through casual reading.  A forced new line is made by pressing enter, and is 
shown as a dollar sign followed by a p.  When you're working with a nonkeyword 
type document and decide to save it as a keyword document, the new changes will 
show up in your keyword document, but not in the original nonkeyword type.  For 
instance, if you were working in a word file and made modifications and decided 
to save it as a keyword file, the keyword file will reflect those modifications 
but the original word file will appear as it did before you began to alter it.  
I hope this has cleared things up a bit, or maybe you could explain a little
