$fm means format marker.  I suspect they're things that bn doesn't quite 
know what to do with, but I'm not sure about that.  I've tried deleting 
them, but it doesn't work.  If you change how new lines are shown in 
reading mode, you won't see codes at all.

Hi all.

I also am not sure about $c either.  Is there a concise list of format
markers anywhere?  I know there is a chapter on the subject and an
appendix that discusses searching for them but I was wondering if there
was a list of all of them anywhere in case you come accross one you
can't recognise.
