I hope this will clarify and not confuse even further. To get the atsign,
press space with u then dot 4 and this will produce the atsign. Pressing space
with u
tells the braillenote that the next character you enter should be considered to
be in uppercase. That's how the dot 4 becomes an atsign. Any characters
you press after that will again be considered by the bn to be in lower case.
If, for some reason, you want to produce other special characters which require
the bn to be in upper case, press space with u two times and you should see a
message saying caps lock on. Then, until you press space with u again,
everything would be put into upper case including special characters. You
probably would rarely if ever do this, so the space with u command is a quick
way to generate a single character which can only be created in uppercase mode.

I'm pretty sure the space with u while in upper case mode returns you to
lowercase mode, but I'm doing this from memory as I now have a qt keyboard and
my reference isn't handy at the moment. But, everything else should definitely
be accurate.

Hope this helps.

You only need to put the space with u in front of the dot 4. You do not
need to hit dot 1 after that either, as this will produce an a as expected.
