Dear Nicola, I do not know if Jonathan has had time to contact you privately, so hope this information proves useful in some way. Yesterday I assisted a U.S. customer in establishing an Infrared GPRS connection through a Samsung cell phone using Cingular. We specified a service name, then chose Hayes compatible on Infrared as the modem type. Cingular, as most U.S. cell companies seem to, had an access number to dial in order to launch their GPRS connection. If using a Braille keyboard, I recommend switching to computer Braille by pressing Backspace with J to ensure that this information is entered correctly because these access codes make use of asterisks and pound signs. Now, there was also a service username and password which were required before this connection began working. Tech support for Cingular originally said that their wasn't and that these fields should be left blank, but further interrogation revealed that these items did need to be filled in. So, be certain that you have all of this information, and you should be able to connect. Before we entered the service username and password, we received the precise messages regarding connection and disconnection you describe below. Obviously, these messages reflect that the modem has been dialed, has been answered, but was then disconnected because of invalid username/password information.
Hope this helps. ---------------------------------------- Dan Brown Technical Support Pulse Data HumanWare Phone: (925) 681-4636 E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Nicola Sanders Sent: Monday, December 15, 2003 10:28 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Braillenote] GPRS connection: still having problems Hi all, I'm afraid I'm still unable to connect my BrailleNote to the Internet via GPRS using my Nokia 6610 mobile phone's infrared port. I asked tech support for the parameters for dial-up networking using Windows, but they weren't very helpful and didn't know much about it. The name of my mobile network here in Belgium is Mobistar. I've been sniffing around on the Internet and I have now managed to establish an infrared GPRS connection using my laptop (the proprietary software didn't work), so I presume that that means that the phone itself is set up correctly. I have named the Active Access Point "internet.be", as instructed by tech support, but whenever I try to connect with the BN, the phone's display shows the message "GPRS access point invalid". I have tried all kinds of parameter permutations within my Directory of Services, both with and without the primary and secondary DNS addresses, which don't seem to be necessary when I connect to the PC. I have received conflicting information regarding the need to configure my phone's Service Settings (which I can access from the PC Wap Manager using the Nokia PC Suite software). I have experimented with this but it doesn't seem to make any difference to the BN. I get the message "dialing, logging on, logon successful", followed immediately by a beep and the message "disconnected". Is there any way to configure the settings for the "Hayes compatible on infrared" modem option within the BN? I notice from the Nokia modem options installed on the PC that the connection type is PPP, idle timeout is 3 minutes etc, but I don't know whether this is relevant to my problem. Does the BN support PPP connections, whatever they might be? I apologise for the long and rambling message, but I really would appreciate any thoughts on this. Jonathan, if you have a spare moment, could you perhaps give me some idea of how your phone and BN are set up? Please feel free to contact me off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you feel that this is off topic and/or boring to the list.
