If I had a memory card or a disk drive, actually, I do  have a disk drive, I'd 
never leave those things connected.
I'd store them and connect when the machine is on.  If not, I think our little 
guys will get confused and cause trouble. I am even likely to disconnect those 
things before a reboot, you know those fixes you can find in the manual for 
trouble shooting? I suspect that they're reboots.
