Subject: Re: [Braillenote] instant messaging

Hi all,

BrailleNote could use an IRC client, in my opinion, more than an Instant
Messaging client, for interoperability with what you know as "FreedomChat"
and for more interactive discussion about the BrailleNote on PulseData IRC
channels. However, if an instant messaging client for one-to-one
communication and presence were on the brailleNote, it should be a
multiprotocol one, or else one which supports an approved and open
standard such as the iETF's SIMPLE or the Jabber Software Foundation's
XMPP rather than proprietary rubbish such as mSN, Yahoo, AIM or ICQ. The
added bonus of supporting a protocol like XMPP, you see, is that the
connections to legacy, proprietary systems such as MSN, AIM, ICQ and Yahoo
are made by the Jabber service, not the client.

Just in case people don't know this, there are a number of HTTP (i.e. web)
based services for accessing and using various Messenger services - you
supply your credentials and a javascript-driven web interface or a lite
character-symbolic regular-refresh HTML-standards-based system logs on and
performs actions on the network on your behalf in response to CGI actions
caused by your clicking links or manipulating form controls. One such
system is Microsoft's WebMessenger, which PK users may or may not enjoy
luck using ( http://webmessenger.msn.com/ ). There are other third-party
ones with superior browser compatibility and standards compliance, but be
sure to investigate privacy and security issues if you use those. I
successfully use and enjoy E-Messenger (e-messenger.net) with BrailleNote,
software version 5.1 Build 22. This it was that gave me Messenger access
while my machines were all away being repaired.

Cheers,
Sabahattin
