The PCMCIA adapter has no affect on the speed at which the BN downloads books. I use both a CF card inserted directly into the back slot and another such CF card inserted into a PCMCIA adapter, and the BN handles them at the same speed.

The BrailleNote seems to be very spiffy when moving around a document once it is loaded, but depending on the initial size of the file, it takes around 25 to 30 seconds loading a 500k book when the CF card is inserted into the compact flash slot, to around a minute if the book is a big one, like The Winds of War, which is around two megabytes as a text file. I noticed similar speeds when loading books from the internal flash memory of the BrailleNote, which makes me believe it's more of a processor issue, but of course I could be wrong. Is this loading time a processor issue, the card reader, or a combination of both? My only card reader is USB-based, so if it would help, I may have to buy a PCMCIA version.
