I signed up to book share in December. Prior to paying for my subscription,
I was able to login to book share and download books into openbook without a
paid subscription. However when I went to unpack the books I could not,
because you need to use your email address and password. The process goes
out and makes sure that you have a paid subscription first. This process may
or may not be the same for the BN. However if I were to guess I would
suspect the it is similar.

I think that's what it was, actually. You have to pay before they will let
you log on. I couldn't use the service for a while after I signed up for it
because i had to wait for the money to be there.
