Dear Don and List,

Although I haven't specifically seen the bags you're talking about, it
sounds like a good suggestion. I also think one should keep the cost
implication in mind, as it is, we are forced to pay much more for
adaptive devices, due to the relatively small market and this will never
change. Also, many of us do not have the luxury of government funding
and would prefer to have the price increases applied to improve the unit
itself, rather than for something like waterproofing. However, I do
agree with the fact that the carrying case aught to be sufficient to
protect the unit when one is compelled to walk in the rain, as I believe
that to be essential, due to the fact that it is sometimes unavoidable,
especially for people using the gps facility together with the bn.

Sighted people don't expect their cameras, watches or cel phones to
remain in tact when douced with liquid, so why should we expect that
from PDI, or, for that matter, from any other dealer?

Subject: [Braillenote] waterproofing the braillenote

Hello Listers, As somebody pointed out, any substantial waterproofing of
the Braillenote family would almost certainly add considerably to its
cost, with no additional facilities gained. Therefore, might I humbly
suggest a very low-tech provisional solution. Consider the ubiquitous
polythene bag of the type which most sumermarkets give away for you to
carry your purchases. If you intend to expose your Braillenote to
possible saturation, just pop it in to one of these bags and seal it
with a rubber-band. Short Of throwing it over Niagra falls, it will
keep it dry. I find the speech can still be heard clearly and the
Braille, though slightly less sharp, is still readable. Of course I
wouldn't like to read a book this way, but for short information, I
find it acceptable, and a heck of a lot cheaper than some more drastic
measures. Long live the plastic-bag. oh yes, first make sure the bag
is completely empty and clean.
Don Cooper.
