Hello Beth and List,
Perhaps my needs when using a BN aren't as complex as those of others. I
usually create all of my files in Keyword. Should I need to export them
elsewhere, I usually export to a plain braille file. If I can't read a
particular Microsoft Word File, I usually read it with my OpenBook 7.00
program and convert it to a Real Text File. I place that RTF File into my
BN and work with it from that point on. XL, PDF and Microsoft Office files
aren't readable at this time if I understand everything correctly.
I fully realize you are trying to make the best decision on which high tech
equipment would be most useful and dependable for you! That certainly is
understandable! One wishes to get the best bang for their buck so to
speak. I'm not trying to minimize anyone's problem when they have lost
important critical files. I'm certain some of the fault is with the
present windows Cee system which is being used at this time. Whenever an
important critical file has been lost, that is a crisis in itself I
agree! I don't feel that the problem is pandemic! I for one have never
lost a file in the three years I had my BN. I have encountered other
difficulties which were solved easily and efficiently thanks to this
list. I guess I'm trying to say the BN probably doesn't have worse
problems than any other piece of technology out there. Whenever memory is
being used to store files, this in itself has some risks one needs to take
when relying on memory when storing files regardless of which device is
being used. When depending on memory only to store files, the key word is
truly "backup". Back up all files and one will minimize any lost
files! It is difficult to really know how problematic a bug might be since
one will only hear from those with a particular problem on this list. One
will hear more about problems than they will hear from those of us who have
had no difficulty with our units. It is so easy to conclude that everybody
is having a particular problem with a BN when it really is a few who are
experiencing a given problem. It is difficult to know how much of a
difficulty is out there especially if one simply depends on the negative
information alone on this list.
Had the right person come along, I probably would have sold my BN prior to
my getting the hardware upgrade! The hardware upgrade and Keysoft 5.0 and
now 5.1 are vast improvements to Keysoft 4.01. I heard someone discussing
5.01 billed 22. I wouldn't fool with that at all now that 6.01 is around
the corner! I'd rather have that upgrade and I hope to have my $400 ready
when purchasing it. My BN has come in handy when I was changing to a new
ISP. I kept track of the old one with the BN and forwarded my mail to the
new address. My wife used my BN for Email prior to getting her computer up
and running. The BN is without doubt the best one when converting
documents from text to braille and back again! I could go on and on!
I hope this helps give you a truer picture of what is really going on! I'd
wait till the upgrade is out, then purchase your unit unless you want a
head start! Try to decide which technology will best meet your needs, then
purchase it! This isn't the place for comparing the bn with everything out
there! This is strictly a BN list!

Thanks, Jonathan, for your last post re these problems. I would doubt that
everyone who has had files disappear had a flash card in the slot when it
occurred, though I may be wrong about that. Also, what about, say, people
who only have BN access--while on a business trip, for example. If this
E-mail overload problem is even fairly common, isn't that a detriment? Will
the PK and software upgrade for the BN handle these issues better? Thanks.
Beth
