Tina, Not sure I'm totally understanding, but I'll give it a shot anyway.
If you access your email using the bn and have your directory of services entry set up to dial one of the earthlink access numbers, you're accessing earthlink from within it's own network just as you would if you were using your dialup account from your pc. In this case you may not need authentication although I've heard that earthlink is supposed to start requiring authentication for all message traffic sent over their network. Don't know if this has been put into effect though. If, on the otherhand, you're accessing your earthlink using a directory of services entry containing a number such as *99# or some other number that isn't actually a 7-digit phone number, you are most likely accessing earthlink from outside of the earthlink network. In that case, you definitely need authentication in order to send email. You don't need it for receiving email from earthlink, just sending. Hope this helps.
