Lisa,

Below is my explanation for inserting files using the BrailleNote. Are you
following this exact procedure? I have gone into detail about the behavior of
the BN in certain situations, so read the entire explanation. You may not have
known about some of these behaviors, which may have caused your problem.
Documents with and without extensions (all documents have extensions, but you
will not see the extensions of some when viewing files on the BrailleNote)
insert fine on my unit in all applications where the Block Commands Menu is
both accessible and has the Insert File Option present on the menu.

1) Open the document/e-mail/planner day where you want to insert a file. You
cannot insert from outside a document, so you must be in the document into
which you want to insert a file. Place your cursor at the point at which you
want the inserted content to start, because all inserted content will be placed
after the cursor starting at the current point at which your cursor is located.

2) Press [SPACE with B], [CONTROL with B] to enter the Block Commands Menu.

3) Once you are sure you are in the Block Commands Menu, press I to select the
Insert file option.

4) You'll be prompted "Insert document from which drive?". This prompt is
asking you to specify the drive on which the document which you want to insert
is located, NOT the drive of your open document into which you are inserting a
file. So, if, for example, you were now in a document on the Flash Disk, but
you wanted to insert a document from the CompactFlash drive. You would press C
at this prompt for the "CompactFlash" drive.

5) After pressing ENTER, you will be prompted for the folder in which the
document you want to insert is located. Again, this applies to the document
you want to insert, not the open document. You could either type the folder,
or press SPACE to go to the list of folders on the selected drive. Press ENTER
when you have either finished typing in the folder, or you are on that folder
in the list. Alternatively, at the "Folder Name?" prompt, you can press [SPACE
with T], [CONTROL with T] to enter Directory Tree View. You can type in your
path name with a slash separating each layer of the directory, including the
first one. Alternatively, you could browse directories as you would folders,
going one layer deeper at a time. If you need to go up a level, press [SPACE
with dots 2-3], [READ with 7]; this command can only be executed at the
"Directory Name?" prompt, so if you are browsing sub-directories and wish to
execute it, pressing BACKSPACE with return you to the "Directory Name?" prompt,
and pressing BACKSPACE again will return you to the "Drive?" prompt. Once you
have selected a directory, you can press ENTER. The [SPACE with T], [CONTROL
with T] command toggles between Folder List and Directory Tree views.

6) Once you have pressed ENTER to select the folder/directory in which the
document you want to insert is located, you will be presented with the "File
Name?" prompt. You can type the file name, without needing to type an
extension. For example, if the file is called file.wp5, there is no need to
type the .wp5 extension, and "file" (without and quotes) will suffice due to
the fact that the BN will associate it with the file 'file.wp5', and this file
will be inserted. However, if you had two files with the same name, say
'file.wp5' and 'file.doc', you would have to enter the extension, so the BN
will know to which file you are referring. If using a BT, the period should be
typed as dots 4-6 and not dots 2-5-6 because dots 2-5-6 will be spoken by
KeySoft as the dd contraction in this case (this is a conflict between DBT and
KeySoft), and what is spoken is translated as the file name, so you will be
told that a file does not exist because no file would indeed exist with an
extension such as dddoc as opposed to .doc. Also, if typing in an extension,
you will have to press [SPACE with X], [READ with X] at the "Document Name?"
prompt until you get to the "Entry Type: All Files" view; otherwise, you will
be told that no file of that name exists when this really isn't true because
only KeyWord documents are considered "KeySoft documents" by the BN and other
files (non-Keyword type) are not accepted at the "KeySoft Documents" view,
which is the first view you are presented with at the "Document Name?" prompt.
Note that the "KeySoft Files" and "All Files" views available at the "Document
Name?" prompt are different from the "All Documents", "All Files", and other
views available at the "List of Documents" prompt, and the reason you would see
such documents as .brf and .txt in the list of documents but not be able to
enter them with their associated extensions if need be (you can enter them
without extensions at this view) at the first "KeySoft Files" view presented at
the "Document Name?" prompt is because .txt and .brf files are considered
"documents" but not "KeySoft documents". Anyway, you can either type in the
file name, or press SPACE to browse through the list of files on that folder.
Note that the first view is "List of text documents", so to see other views,
press [SPACE with X], [READ with X] until you get to the view that you want and
which will show you the document you want to insert. Once you have either
typed in the document or are on it in the list, press ENTER to select it.

7) Your cursor will now be placed at the END of the document you have inserted,
after the last character of the inserted file, and NOT at the beginning of the
inserted file where you placed your cursor before starting the Insert process
(in Step 1). You will have to move your cursor and/or Braille display BACK to
see the file that you have just inserted. However, the inserted file should be
there.

HTH.

Maria
