"I suspect that there are other naked portafilters that would work on
a Brewtus II and accept a triple basket."

Good suspicion!

Just buying a triple basket won’t cut it for Brewtus!

You need an appropriate (deeper) portafilter to hold it.

Since you need a new portafilter anyway, why don’t you get yourself a
Naked instead of a conventional one? That way you can start
troubleshooting your espresso making and hopefully learn from your
mistakes.

After a long search of options and places, the best place I found was
“ChrisCoffee.com”.
I bought the Rancilio Naked Portafilter -US$57. It is heavier then
the original Brewtus portafilter and has a beautiful and soft (meaning
safe) aftermarket cut (Chris sends them out to a machinist).
The portafilter is sold with one triple LaMarzocco-style basket (made
by a third party).

While you are at it, buy yourself a couple more triple baskets. That
way you don’t need to dry a single basket to make 2-3-4 coffees in a
row. You will have a new one -squeaky dry and hot waiting on the cup
warmer for every shot you pull. Translation –less chance of side-wall
channeling.

If you don’t have an Espro “clickable” tamper you can get it with the
same order –all while saving on shipping.

A note about the Rancilio bottomless portafilter. It does not lock
all the way to 7 o’clock like the original Brewtus. It stops a little
short of that position because of the slightly thicker locking
“ears”. It is a perfect and solid (safe) fit, though, (without
replacing the grouphead gasket with a thinner one). I have been using
it for months. And I still use the original portafilter for
backflushing only.

Another tip –make sure you remove the spring from your new bottomless
portafilter. Snapping the basket in it will disturb the side seal and
we have all tasted the bitter results of this.

Another good place for LM-style triple baskets is
“EspressoParts.com”. Their Rancilio bottomless portafilter was more
expensive, though.

I hope this helps.

Good luck,

Brewtus Maximus
