The only ways that I know to destroy a pump is to run it dry or to run
it with no pressure release. Do you have the rotary or vibe? As long
as the opv is open then there will always be a path to let out extra
pressure, so water will pass and no lines will blow. (That was my
stupidity, when I installed my rotary I left the opv closed on
accident and blew out a teflon hose.)

Just go by taste, but I definitely think that a lower time, under
30sec, would give you a more pleasant cup. 16g is perfect in my
opinion, but.some prefer a lot more.
