Interesting story. My Espresso experience is exactly the opposite. I lived
in a small town outside Paris for 18 months in a flat above a small cafe.
The Cafe owner was Italian and his wife French. Over time my wife and I I
developed a taste for his straight espresso.

When we moved back to the states, we couldn't find anything that tasted
remotely like it. My wife asked why, and started the long road to good home
made espresso.

I also have a second "office" machine. Mine is a Nespresso. It is small,
clean, simple, and makes what a friend calles "Swiss Espresso" which is of
course a little lighter than "Italian Espresso". As you said -- it's
acceptable.

BTW, I've been working with Stumptown Hair Bender. What a pleasure. My
favorite place in NYC (9th Street Espresso) uses it and and produces
spectacular shots. I don't think I've pulled a bad shot yet.
