yeah it looked like the cam follower when i took it apart. i thought maybe todd 
would respond with part numbers so that i could order it from him. thanks for 
the link, hopefully i can find what i need here and get it fixed before it gets 
worse.

You've probably got worn lower cam follower or, worse, a worn cam.
Here's good discussion on cam lubrication and wear issues (http://
coffeetime.wikidot.com/e61-lubrication).  You can buy individual E61
group parts here (http://www.espressoparts.com/E-61ManualGroup).  Hope
this helps.  To know for sure, you'll need to tear down the E61 group
and inspect the parts.  I just did a complete tear down and cleaning
to resolve a leak issue.  If you have a modocum of mechanical skills,
and access toa good set of wrenches, it's a fairly easy task.
