I'm presuming you've recharged your softener every 3 months or so with
salt water (let me know if you need instructions). With doing that
(and YES - special water), I haven't changed the softener more than
once a year. I bought a pack of three and haven't gone thru them yet.
The bigger issue is (as you noted) water quality. I would recommend
buying a water quality tester (google for TDS or Total Dissolved
Solids) meter. I went through all the bottled waters I could find,
but ALL of them have too high a mineral content for protecting my
Brewtus II. So now I use a mixture of half Crystal Geyser (a local
brand) and half distilled water. The end point for me was finding a
bottled water whose taste I liked, and blending it with distilled
water to bring TDS down to 30 parts per million.
With 30 ppm, I have almost ZERO scale inside my Brewtus after six
years. And with only 30 ppm total solids, the softener is almost
irrelevant. And the flavor suits me perfectly.
