I have a B1 that has been in continuous operation for at least 6 years.. Also had the 'quiet during backflush' issue, and which also became quiet during shots... exactly as if the vibrating pump would stop vibrating through its full movement at some point during the flush/shot. Pressure would also drop at this point and the shot would slow to a trickle... I replaced the pump once and it seemed to help for a short while... My thinking was that this had to be an overpressure valve problem since the pump would surely run and overpressure back into the tank even if everything else was stuck (right?) so took that apart and cleaned and adjusted and replaced... no help.
I finally seem to have solved it by accident as I was trying to solve a different problem: I took the steam boiler out completely to clear a blocked tube at the bottom of the boiler connecting it to a magnet actuated valve. This fixed my no steam problem. While I was there, I also took apart said magnet actuated valve and cleaned it up since it proved to be stuck in the closed position. Now I have steam and the 'quiet during backflush/shot' is completely solved, the same pump that was in there runs like a champ and pushes through any puck exactly as it did when it was new. So, long story short, replace/fix the magnet actuated valve at the bottom of the steam boiler (someone here will name it correctly...) but I am not certain why this works (someone here will know why this works).
