The way to clamp tightly without crushing the boiler is to cut half circle "jaws" that match the boiler diameter out of two 5" pieces of 2x4 lumber. Clamp the end of the boiler in a (big) vise so that half circle cutouts conform to the boiler shape. Be sure to clamp the edge of the boiler and not the middle in order not to deform the sides. Once it's secured like that, you can whack the socket handle with a hammer and the heater turns right out.
