Ben - thank you. Turns out i was just being hasty after multiple times taking apart and reassembling. I /had/ swapped two of the springs but created another problem on my 3rd reassembly by installing the lower exhaust valve upside down.... Flipped it back around this time and is now working great. On a more positive note, the lube and cleaning has taken a lot of burnt bitter flavor away - must have needed it!
