My experience with my cable modem:
it acts as kind of a firewall in the sense that it only allows connections
with the MAC address of the nic connected to the modem. So a bridge directly
behind a cable modem is pretty much useless. You need a router, so that the
MAC address will be that of the router's nic and not of the other computer's
nic (located behind the router).
Also, if you want to connect a different nic to the cable modem, and thus
with a different MAC address, you need to reset the modem. I just pull the
power plug out and wait a while...
