Thinking seriously about it. I also implemented a nasty hack for
including a ppp device in a bridge. Conceptually not much to it, but
for detecting broadcast packets being sourced by the ppp device, i
looked at the ip header. I'm sure this will cause some serious frowning
from those who like to keep layer 3 out of layer 2 :). The rest of the
implementation is fairly straightforward. I allow a mac address to be
assigned to a ppp device and then do some skb cloning and header surgery
(general muckery) to make sure the header looks right depending on
what kind of device it came from and where it is going.

I also have use the vtun tap device in the bridge and am pretty happy
with it (but unfortunately it can't replace my ppp hack). I would like
to move the data transport part to the kernel, but haven't had a chance
to look at it yet.
