The IP mode patch is a special case that does a strict subset
of what ebtables does.  

If you want just "brouting" (that is, packets come in through the
bridge, then are routed via your firewall and ip routing rules), then
you don't need the extra power (and complexity) of ebtables, and you can
install just the ipmode patches.

If you want/need ebtables, then you don't need the ipmode patch. 
Instead you need to (as I understand it---I have not actually done this
yet) take the "brouter" example from
http://users.pandora.be/bart.de.schuymer/ebtables/examples.html
and season it to taste.
