William F. Buckley (I assume that's who this is by?) is an absolute hack who
is completely comfortable with saying any damn thing that supports his cause.
I would no more look to him for advice on how a democracy should work than I
would to any other over-the-hill, irrelevant, self-appointed guardian of the
public weal. If the situation were reversed - Gore was going to win the
electoral vote but Bush was ahead in the popular vote - Buckley would be
crying croccodile tears about how the witlessness of democracy was standing
in the way of a righteous man triumphing (although his language would be much
more pompous and impenetrable) and how Gore would have no moral right to be
leading our country.
