I think that if your are trying to represent dolphins being able to dowith slightly opaque wave fronts leading away
ultrasound type imaging, that this would be unrealistic, unless the
dolphins had a type of aperture to control depth of penetration, and a
method to "focus" on a discrete plane. However, I think a better effect, is
to represent the dolphins view of a sonographic image, as something like a
shimmering holographic image
from the contours of an object. This would all have to be in grayscale of
course, since color is not a function of sound. Check out
http://www.nvidia.com/Pages.nsf/Lookup/Reflection/$file/Reflection.mpg
(This is a big file).
By the way, I found a dolphin model at the same site -
http://www.nvidia.com/Developer . You would know more than me on how to
check it out.

I couldn't even load the mpg file you gave me... the server wouldn't even
respond. I have no intention of making it look like ultrasound images...
Ultrasound images are 2-D, and dolphin sonar is full 3-D, I just need to know
what that sound reflection of cartilage would look like in comparison to the
reflection of bone. As for color... I had intended to make it greyscale,
though I considered using color to represent texture, as dolphin sonar is
able to determine the texture of objects, but I think I will do it with
greyscale anyway.
As for dolphin models, I think I shall do my own... I have made dolphin
models before, I just need models with much greater detail. My existing 3D
work can be seen at:

The servers are experiencing difficulty right now, so if it doesn't load the
first time, try again later. I'm working on getting my own web site to post
my old work and stuff about the production of this animation, so I don't have
to worry about the terrible bandwidth, and server downtime problems that
Xoom/NBCi have, but I am waiting to see if I can snatch up a domain name I
wanted that has expired and should be available any day now. Damn... I just
checked it, the name got snatched up before I could get it... Oh well, I have
another domain name to fall back on (I always have a backup plan), and it's
still available... I just placed the order. I should have my own site up in
about 3 days (internet propigation time). I'll post the URL when it is up.
