Bookface.com has a free David Brin short story called 'The Fourth Vocation of George Gustaf' in its Science Fiction section. Haven't read it yet, but it's quite an old story (1984). Bookface has a number of very good stories and entire novels accessible for free(e.g. by Peter F Hamilton, Greg Bear, JMS). It's a site well worth checking out.
