John, I've got to strenuously disagree with your contention that
"abortion is accepted" in the ST universe.
No, ST is portrayed as a place where unwanted pregnancies never happen.
Apparently we've perfected birth control in the 24th century, so much
so that no one ever talks or thinks about it.
....must....resist....but....can't......
And I agree. Look abortion is one of these social problems that will
disappear with improved biomedical technology. We will have the power
to prevent unwanted pregnancy. And, if an unwanted pregnancy does
occur, we will have the power to safely dis-associate the mother and
the embryo without harming either. The baby can be adopted to another
family, the "birth" mother can go on.
Anyway, ST presents a universe where reproductive problems are solved
behind the scenes by biomedical means, just like economic problems are
solved behind the scenes by replicators. Nobody in the Federation is
hungry unless they crash-land on a deserted planet, nobody needs
clothing, shelter, money, etc.
