Better late than never, here come the final installments in the Brin-L
Guide to The Practice Effect. If Somebody ever is feeling like being
ambitious with a Web Page, I have the relevant "Guide" messages to provide
an OnLine Readers Guide to The Practice Effect.

The Title of this one is fairly obvious. Although my Latin is a bit
rusty, it should be something to the effect of "Thus, the cookie crumbles."
Armed with his well-practiced technology, Baron Kremer is playing his
cards. Under virtual duress he forces many other nobles to personally
hang officers of the central government, effectively beginning the war.
Caught in the middle are Dennis, Arth, and Linnora..... and of course
everyone's favorite deus ex machina - the Sahara Tech exploration bot.
The robot again tries to fill its debriefing, much to the chagrin of
Dennis. I find Brin's use of *science* as a running joke most intriguing,
but I wonder what it means. I also can't help but wonder if maybe the
robot might not have some very *useful* things to report.
The geogrpahy of the planet becomes somewhat confused here. On page 222,
Prince Linsee notes that the Western Barons have united to block the
*eastern* passages, and are moving towards the North of the federal
district. IIRC, Zuslik (domain of Baron Kremer is to the West of the
L'Toff mountains.) On page 226 Count Feif-dei notes that this attack is
designed only to cover the main assault in the *East.* If someone can
piece together a plausable geography from this, let me know.
Anyhow, Dennis appears to have just invented the Ben-Hur chariot race,
complete with Arth swinging poles at opponents. Then of course there is
that nasty cliff-hanger ending. ;-)
pg. 221 - Both Dennis and Brady are relatively tall compared to the locals.
Brin has subtly noted the lack of nutrition in these parts.
pg 221 - Is Arth familiar with Socrates?
pg 231 - Any Brinellers famililar with the Chatham Works in England?
